The grey clouds loomed over Raipur on the 24th of Sunday, 2023, subtly mirroring the mixed experience that was to unfold at the Solar Energy Park, popularly known as Urja Park. After a slightly overpriced taxi journey from Hytt Raipur, initiated at 8:30 pm, and contrasting negotiations with local drivers, I found myself standing alone at the entrance, a Rs. 20 entry fee and a rain-draped afternoon ahead.
Established by the Chhattisgarh Renewable Development Agency (CRDA), Urja Park curates a unique blend of entertainment and education, emphasizing the significance of renewable energy and conservation in an era pivoting towards sustainability. The premise of energy education parks like these is pivotal – not only to foster awareness among the adults but to inculcate essential knowledge amidst children through interactive and fun-filled activities.
Brimming with lush greenery, the park is meticulously maintained, offering visitors an introduction to various fauna, where every tree and plant is neatly kept and preserved. The children's area, featuring science puzzles, solar boats, and toy cars, ostensibly promised a merry time of learning and play, integrating knowledge about renewable energy sources seamlessly with leisure. However, much to my disappointment, the apparatus and rides, pivotal in demonstrating the functionality and potential of renewable energy, lay dormant and non-operational during my visit.Despite the lush surroundings, the closure of the interactive and fun aspects, such as the exciting science puzzles, boating, and musical fountains, cast a slight shadow over the vibrant concept of Urja Park. The musical fountains, which ostensibly come to life during times of significant footfall, were silent, and the solar boats and toy cars were conspicuously still amidst the gentle drizzle that accompanied my exploration.
Moreover, food stalls, although not presenting a wide variety, promised a hygienic and quick bite for visitors looking to satiate their hunger amidst their exploration. But, akin to the rides and attractions, they too were devoid of patrons, attributed partly to the unanticipated rain and perhaps, the non-functional status of several attractions within the park.
Positioned 8 km from the main city, Urja Park still stands as a symbol of the importance of renewable energy, with its objective to enlighten and engage visitors in understanding and appreciating the potential of energy conservation and alternative energy sources. The innovative concept behind it is undeniably commendable, aiming to combine knowledge with recreational activities for children and adults alike.
In the context of environmental conservation and the global shift towards renewable energy, spaces like Urja Park are imperative to foster awareness and encourage a sustainable lifestyle amongst the populace. Despite the dormant state of its apparatus during my visit, the park itself subtly narrated a tale of innovation, education, and entertainment, enveloped amidst the serene and lush greens, whispering the significant message of energy conservation.
However, the apparent need for maintenance and revival of the interactive apparatus is evident to ensure that Urja Park thrives as a holistic educational and recreational destination, where knowledge is not merely shared but experienced, fostering a profound understanding and appreciation towards adopting sustainable practices in our daily lives. I came to Hytt Raipur by walking in the ViP Marg witnessing the beauty of Raipur.
