The longevity and evolution of academic institutions are deeply rooted in their adaptability, innovative initiatives, and an unwavering commitment to academic excellence. Sadly, many public universities, especially in Karnataka, are battling an array of challenges that threaten their prestige and efficacy. Here's a closer examination:
Lack of Motivation &
Complacency: A guaranteed paycheck might lead some
university staff towards a path of complacency, diminishing the drive to
innovate or aspire for loftier academic standards.
Resistance to Change:
Universities need to remain flexible and forward-thinking, adapting to the
ever-shifting educational milieu. A reluctance to do so can render them
archaic.
Ignoring Global Best
Practices: Not recognizing faculty with significant Scopus
publications as Ph.D. guides is a missed opportunity for rich academic
discourse and mentorship.
Undervaluation of Skilled
Faculty: Some believe that recognizing qualified affiliated
college faculty as Ph.D. guides may overshadow others. This reluctance severely
narrows the academic horizon for students.
Outmoded Infrastructure
Views: Citing affiliated colleges for lacking 'appropriate'
libraries seems redundant, especially with digital libraries like Nlist.
Ignoring these digital advances highlights a disconnect with modern academic
tools.
Limited Knowledge
Outreach: The absence of initiatives like hosting international
conferences or starting academic journals restricts their global academic
influence and discourse.
NAAC Grade Limitations:
Lower NAAC grades prohibit these institutions from venturing into online
courses, curbing their academic reach and flexibility.
Red Tape:
Although some recent strides have been made, bureaucratic procedures, like
stringent inspections, still act as deterrents.
However, not all is
bleak. Taking the example of the newly minted Srinivas University,
there's a stark contrast. Its Commerce, Management and other departments
actively encourage faculty to pursue their Ph.D. degrees. The university is
brimming with a vivacious research culture. Many exemplary faculty members have
been honoured as Research Professors, reflecting the institution's commitment to
research. Dr. P S Aithal, the current Vice Chancellor, is a linchpin in this
transformative journey. As an esteemed researcher himself, he has been
instrumental in fostering a prolific research environment. Adding another
feather to its cap, the university has its in-house journals, allowing
researchers to publish without any burdensome processing fees.
On a personal note, I am
profoundly honoured to associate with Srinivas University as a Research
Professor. The accompanying picture vividly captures the enthusiasm of young
research fellows after their Doctoral Advisory Committee Meeting held on 16-09-2023 at City Campus, Srinivas University with Prof. Sudhir Raj of Nitte University, Dr. Ganesh Bhat and Prof. Shailashri of Srinivas University, underscoring
the dynamic research ambience fostered here.
