A Tribute to Kalaimamani Shri T R Sambasivan: A Luminary of the Veena
In
the vast expanse of Carnatic music, few names shine as brightly as Kalaimamani
Shri T R Sambasivan. Born into a lineage of musical maestros, his journey with
the Veena was destined from the start. As the son of the esteemed Veena Vidwan
Late Sri T. N Ramaswamy Sastry, his initiation into the world of music was both
profound and personal.
His
foundational training began under the watchful eyes of his father, Veenai Sri
T. N Ramaswamy Sastry. This early immersion was further enriched by the
teachings of Veenai Smt. Ranganayakai Rajagopalan. Both these stalwarts were
direct disciples of the legendary Vainika Vidwan Sri Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer,
ensuring that Sambasivan's musical education was rooted in tradition and
authenticity. His musical prowess was further honed under the guidance of
Gottuvadhya Vidwan Sri Narashimhan, the father of the celebrated Ravikiran.
Beyond
his musical pursuits, Sambasivan was a scholar in his own right, completing his
B.Com from the renowned Kamaraj University in Madurai, India. But it was the
world of music that beckoned him, leading him to stages across India and
beyond.
From
the esteemed halls of All India Radio in Madras, where he began his
performances in 1988, to the vibrant Sabhas across the nation, his music
resonated with audiences far and wide. His collaboration with Thavil
Chakravarthy Haridwaramangalam Sri A. K Palanivel further enriched the musical
tapestry of many a Sabha.
Sambasivan's
artistry transcended borders. He was invited to enthrall audiences in countries
like France and Germany in 1988. His performances in Singapore, from 1988 to
1994, were broadcasted regularly by the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation,
touching the hearts of countless listeners. Japan, too, witnessed his
brilliance in 1977 and 1988 as part of a Cultural Exchange Programme.
His
dedication to the art was evident in his role as a faculty member at the
Academy of Fine Arts of the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society. Between July
1988 and June 1994, he mentored over 200 students in Singapore, orchestrating
performances that showcased the next generation of Veenai talent. Back home in
India, he continued his academic contributions as a lecturer at the Tamil Nadu
Government Music College in Chennai from 24th October 1997.
The
world stages of the US in 2013 and Jakarta in 2015 also echoed with his
melodies, further establishing his global footprint.
In
recognition of his unparalleled contributions to the world of Carnatic music,
he was bestowed with the prestigious Kalaimamani award in 1999. Beyond his
performances, Sambasivan also possessed a deep understanding of the Veena's
craftsmanship, often involving himself in its repair and maintenance.
Kalaimamani
Shri T R Sambasivan was not just a musician; he was a beacon of tradition, a
bridge between generations, and an ambassador of Carnatic music to the world.
His legacy is one of dedication, passion, and an undying love for the Veena.
