Introduction
It was an honour to be invited as a
Resource Person to conduct a session on Mendeley, the renowned reference
management software, at St. Agnes College, Mangalore. This enlightening
programme was organized as part of the celebration of Dr. S R Ranganathan’s Birth
Day, a day dedicated to the father of library science in India.
The Inaugural Ceremony
The program commenced at 9:30 am in the
esteemed presence of Dr. Shailarani, Librarian of the Balmata Government First
Grade College, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The library of St.
Agnes College, under the guidance of Dr. Vishala, played a pivotal role in
organizing this significant event.
Honouring Dr. S R Ranganathan
Dr. Shailarani eloquently spoke about the
five laws of library science contributed by Dr. S R Ranganathan. She delved
into detail about his monumental contributions to the development of library
science, which have shaped the way libraries function today.
Embracing Technological Change
Dr. Sureshramana Mayya, an esteemed
colleague and a visionary in the field, highlighted the technological changes
that have transformed modern libraries. He emphasized the crucial role
librarians play in adapting to these changes to meet the evolving expectations
of students and researchers.
A Call to Action
The Administrative Officer of the
institute, Sr. Carmel Rita, encouraged the attendees to actively utilize the
rich resources available in the library. Her words were a reminder that
libraries are treasure troves of knowledge, waiting to be explored.
The Importance of Research
Dr. Venessa, the Principal of St. Agnes
College, stressed the significance of research in the academic and professional
growth of individuals. Her insights were a testament to the college’s
commitment to fostering a vibrant research culture.
Prize Distribution: Celebrating
Excellence in Review of Book and Video Competitions
A special prize distribution ceremony was
conducted to recognize and reward outstanding contributions in the Review of
Book and Video Competitions. Dr. Mayya and Dr. Shailarani had the honor of
distributing the prizes to the deserving winners, marking a memorable moment of
the event.

My Session on Mendeley
After the inaugural ceremony, I, Dr.
Mayya, conducted a detailed session on using Mendeley. The session covered:
Introduction to Mendeley: An overview of
what Mendeley is and why it is an essential tool for researchers.
Reference Manager: How Mendeley can
help in organizing and citing research papers effortlessly.
Mendeley Cite: A guide to using
Mendeley’s plugin for Microsoft Word, which makes citing and creating
bibliographies a breeze.
Mendeley Web Importer: Demonstrating
how to import references directly from your web browser into your Mendeley
library.
Exploring the Library in Detail: A comprehensive
walkthrough of Mendeley’s features, including organizing references, creating
groups, and syncing data across devices.
Ms. Prema D’Souze graciously introduced
me to the audience, setting a warm and welcoming tone for the session.
A Heartfelt Thanks
The event concluded with Dr. Kavyashri B,
Assistant Professor of Psychology, extending a heartfelt vote of thanks to all
the guests and participants. Her words were a fitting end to a day filled with
learning and inspiration.
Conclusion
It was a day marked by rich discussions,
insightful talks, and the shared passion for learning and research. I am deeply
grateful to St. Agnes College for inviting me to be a part of this enriching
experience.
