The Department of Commerce orchestrated an insightful session aimed at enhancing awareness about MBA programs offered by various esteemed universities and institutes. This program, tailored exclusively for Final Year B.Com students, took place on February 17, 2017. The event was facilitated by two distinguished experts, Prof. Sudhir Raj and Prof. Radhakrishana Sharma, both esteemed professors at the Justice K S Hegde Institute of Management.

Dr. Sureshramana Mayya, Head of the Department, took the initiative to introduce the guest speakers to the attending students, further enhancing the significance of the session. Ms. Raksha, a faculty member of the department, was also present during this insightful occasion.

The program's primary focus was to provide comprehensive insights into the multifaceted realm of MBA programs, spanning across various renowned institutions. By inviting Prof. Sudhir Raj and Prof. Radhakrishana Sharma, experts in the field, the department ensured that students received firsthand information about the nuances and benefits of pursuing an MBA. MGM Degree College Celebrates Valedictory Function of Annual Athletic Meet

The Valedictory Function of the Annual Athletic Meet at MGM Degree College was a momentous event held on February 15, 2017, at 2.45 pm in the Nuthana Ravindra Mantapa. Graced by the presence of esteemed Chief Guests, Mr. Lachendra and Mr. Abbas, coaches of Mr. Manish and Mr. Hassan, renowned National Level Athletes, the occasion was led by Prof. Kusuma Kamath, the Principal of MGM College. Dr. Sureshramana Mayya, Student Welfare Officer of the College, was also a distinguished presence on the stage. Ms. Jayashri, the Physical Education Officer of the College, extended a warm welcome to the guests.

The highlight of the event was the felicitation of Mr. Manish for his exceptional accomplishments at the national level. His remarkable achievements were truly commendable, with his feats leaving a mark in the athletic world. During the year 2016, Mr. Manish secured a new record in the Junior National 100 Meters, achieving a remarkable timing of 10.5 seconds. He further clinched a Gold Medal during the Junior National in the 200 Meters category with a timing of 21.7 seconds. His prowess extended to the Inter State National Competition, where he earned the esteemed Best National Athletic Award. The Mangalore University Intercollegiate Athletic Meet saw him set a record in the 200 meters race, clocking a remarkable 21.40 seconds. These achievements garnered substantial recognition, leading to support from both Mangalore University and the Karnataka Government. His exceptional performance even paved the way for special training to represent India in the upcoming Olympics, with his selection for the training camp organized by the Indian Sports Academy in New Delhi. His selection was based on his outstanding performance in the 32nd National Games held in Coimbatore in 2016, where he represented Karnataka in the 200 meters race.

Notably, Mr. Manish was one among the 30 selected individuals from across India for this training. His exceptional dedication and talent were further demonstrated by his record-breaking performance in the inter-university meet held at Ajjarkad the previous year, where he completed the 200 meters in an impressive 21.40 seconds, besting the existing record of 21.90 seconds. His rigorous training regimen included three sessions per day, totaling eight hours of practice under the guidance of his coach, Mr. Lachendra.

The event commenced with an invocation by Ms. Keerthana from III B.Com A, setting a reverent tone. Mr. Nithin Shetty, President of the Student Welfare Council, expressed gratitude and proposed the vote of thanks. On-stage presence also included the Sports Secretaries, Mr. Arjun Shetty and Mr. Ranjith. The Valedictory Function of the Annual Athletic Meet aptly celebrated the remarkable achievements of Mr. Manish and Mr. Hassan, inspiring the entire MGM College community with their dedication and athletic prowess.

B.Com (Vocational - Taxation) 1996 Batch Alumni Re-Union Day

 To traverse the pathways of nostalgia, the esteemed alumni of the inaugural batch (1996-97) of B.Com (Vocational Course - Tax Practices and Procedure) at MGM College orchestrated an Alumni Reunion Day on December 26, 2016. This event served as an occasion for a cherished reunion, as well as a platform to honor the faculty members who ardently contributed to imparting tax education. The gathering was graced by 13 accomplished alumni who have etched their marks both in their professional lives and personal pursuits.

The event was thoughtfully held in Room No. 27, a space imbued with historical significance as it was where the first batch had predominantly attended their taxation classes. This gathering was orchestrated in commemoration of the completion of two decades since the inception of the B.Com (Vocational Course - Tax Practices and Procedure) at MGM College, Udupi.

The distinguished guests for the event included:

  1. Prof. Shreesha Acharya, the former Principal, who catalyzed the commencement of the B.Com (Voc) course at MGM College in 1994.
  2. CA Ananthanarayana Pai, the visionary founder faculty who conceptualized and pioneered the course's curriculum and teaching methodologies.
  3. Prof. P. Dayananda Shetty, the former Head of the Department of Commerce at MGM College.
  4. CA Ganesh Y, who imparted knowledge on Indirect Taxes to the alumni.
  5. Dr. Sureshramana Mayya, the current Head of the Department of Commerce and Director of the B.Com Vocational Course at MGM.

Speaking at the event, CA Ananthanarayana Pai eloquently highlighted the remarkable achievements of the first batch. He took pride in the fact that the vocational course alumni are now holding esteemed positions in renowned financial organizations, public sector undertakings, private sector enterprises, and academic institutions. Many have even ventured into successful entrepreneurship, generating employment opportunities for others. CA Pai personally recognized and addressed each member of the first batch by their names, an astonishing feat after two decades. He also reminisced about the pre-digital era, when students had to refer to books without the aid of the internet, and contrasted it with the digital natives of today.

Prof. P. Dayananda Shetty shared his valuable experiences with the first batch of the Vocational Course, while Prof. Shreesha Acharya provided insight into the course's inception and his enduring connection with MGM Commerce students. He lauded the students for their commitment to returning to their alma mater and encouraged faculty to incorporate topics related to land records, technical terms, legal issues, and more into the syllabus.

CA Ganesh offered insights into the challenges faced during the development of the syllabus in 1994 and how he embraced continuous learning through his association with MGM Taxation Course. Dr. Sureshramana Mayya shed light on the department's dedication to upholding the legacy set by past educators. He emphasized that the course continues to attract diligent students and acknowledged the efforts of CA Sridhar Kamath in maintaining its quality.

The event commenced with a brief history of the course. Notably, the first batch of the Vocational Course yielded several Chartered Accountants, including one who is a CPA serving in Melbourne, Australia. CA Suresh Prabhu extended a warm welcome to all attendees, and the alumni from the inaugural batch felicitated the faculty members who had guided them in their tax studies.

Despite Prof. Anand Bhat (First Vocational Director) being unable to attend, his heartfelt message was conveyed by CA Shridhar Kamath. Thirteen students from the first batch graced the event, and as a token of appreciation, roses were presented to them. Additionally, three students from the batch shared their student life experiences, which added a sentimental touch to the proceedings. Many present students of the B.Com Vocational Course also attended this extraordinary event.

The program was skillfully compered by Mr. Ashrith Kotiyan, a Final Year B.Com Vocational Course Student and President of the Student Welfare Council at MGM College. The event concluded with a vote of thanks offered by CA Suresh Prabhu, the visionary behind this exceptional program. Ms. Chithra Rao and Ms. Mamatha of the Department of Commerce provided essential logistical support, while Mr. Ramesh Karla and Ms. Vanitha of the same department were also present to witness the memorable event.

OCT 3 Capital Market Awareness Program Enlightens MGM College Students

 

On September 29, 2016, the Department of Commerce at MGM College orchestrated an enlightening session on Capital Market Awareness. The event welcomed Mr. Ashok Kumar, Managing Director of Lotus Know Wealth, as the esteemed chief guest. Addressing the final year students, Mr. Kumar shared invaluable insights into the realm of Capital Market, shedding light on the advantages of investing in equity and debt instruments.

With an authoritative grasp of the subject, Mr. Kumar elucidated the steps undertaken by BSE to enhance investor-friendliness and safeguard the interests of investors. His comprehensive presentation underscored the significance of investing in the capital market, advocating its merits over traditional bank deposits. Mr. Kumar astutely highlighted the transformative impact of technology on the capital market's operation.

Presiding over the session, Dr. Sureshramana Mayya, Head of the Department of Commerce, graced the occasion with his presence. The event was efficiently conducted by Ms. Aishwarya Holla, who assumed the role of the Master of Ceremony. Ms. Swathi extended a warm welcome to the gathering, setting an amiable tone for the event. Mr. Ramachandra Bhat K from the Department of Commerce introduced the distinguished speaker to the audience, providing context for Mr. Kumar's expertise. Ms. Huda Anwar eloquently proposed a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude for the enlightening session.

MGM College Empowers B.Com General Students through Communication and Leadership Training

A specialized Communication and Leadership Training program was recently conducted at MGM College, Udupi, exclusively designed to enrich the skills of B.Com General students. The program was inaugurated with great enthusiasm by Ms. Chetana Maddodi, representing the Udupi-Manipal Toastmasters Club. The event was graced by the presence of Ms. Kusuma Kamath, who presided over the function and underscored the paramount importance of communication skills for today's youth.

Ms. Kamath emphasized that communication skills, interview techniques, effective participation in group discussions, corporate etiquette, and social media etiquette are indispensable proficiencies for students. She reiterated that fostering employability skills and leadership qualities is pivotal, as they empower students to confidently present themselves to potential employers.

Ms. Chetana Maddodi commended the college for organizing the program at the commencement of the academic session. The event was also attended by Ms. Leelavathi, Head of the Department of Commerce, and Dr Sureshramana Mayya, Student Welfare Officer of MGM College. CA Sridhar Kamath, Guest Faculty of the Department of Commerce, adeptly coordinated the program in collaboration with the Udupi-Manipal Toastmasters Club.

The event commenced with a soulful prayer offered by Miss. Vibha Shenoy from III B.Com, followed by a warm welcome extended by Miss. Sera D'Souza. The program was efficiently compered by Miss. Aisharya Holla, ensuring a smooth flow of proceedings. Expressing gratitude, Mr. Arjun Shetty from III B.Com (General) proposed a vote of thanks.

The coordinated efforts extended to MGM College included Ms. Chithra Kamath from the Department of Commerce, who diligently coordinated various sessions. Miss Meghana Shet expressed gratitude to all resource persons following each insightful session.
