Canara Marathon Freedom Run 2023: My participation to Celebrate Fitness and Enviornmental Consciousness


Manipal, August 15, 2023 – In a remarkable initiative to encourage blood donation and promote a plastic-free society, Canara Bank Circle Office Manipal and Treasury/GTPC Manipal Wing organized the Canara Marathon Freedom Run 2023 on August 15, 2023.

A Grand Inauguration

The marathon was inaugurated by the DGM of Canara Bank, Mrs. Sabitha M Nayak, and Mrs. Mini K Gangadhar, who marked the commencement of the event by releasing balloons into the sky. The AGM of the Bank, Mr. Vishnu Joshi, along with senior managers, officers, and other dignitaries of the bank, graced the occasion with their presence.

Marathon Divisions and Route

The marathon was organized in three divisions: 3 Km, 5 Km, and 10 Km. The routes were meticulously planned, starting and ending at the Canara Bank Circle Office, and passing through various significant landmarks of Manipal.

3 km: Canara Bank Circle Office → Syndicate Circle → Coin Circle → VS Achar Butt Circle → Syndicate Circle → Canara Bank Circle Office

5 km: Canara Bank Circle Office → Syndicate Bank Circle Office → Coin Circle → Sai Radha Valley → Country Inn Hotel → Syndicate Circle → Canara Bank Circle Office

10 km: Canara Bank Circle Office → Syndicate Circle → Coin Circle → Church → Railway Bridge → Sai Radha Valley → Country Inn Hotel → Syndicate Circle → Canara Bank Circle Office

A Community Affair

The event saw enthusiastic participation from various officers of the bank, managers, employees, students from various schools and colleges, teachers, faculty, retired officers of the bank, teaching and non-teaching staff of Kasturba Medical College, members of the ABC Laughter Team, Udupi, and the general public. In total, more than 700 members participated in the event, making it a grand success.

Health and Environment: A Dual Focus

The marathon was not just a race; it was a statement for health and environmental consciousness. A blood donation camp was organized alongside the marathon, and participants and spectators were educated on the importance of a plastic-free society through various awareness programs.

Special Mention

Major Radhakrishna, a founder member of the ABC Laughter Team, played a pivotal role in coordinating the event and served as the Master of ceremonies for the programme.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the hard work of the organizers, the enthusiasm of the participants, and the support of the sponsors and partners. Medals and certificates were distributed to the winners and participants, leaving everyone with a sense of accomplishment and pride

A Day of Learning and Inspiration: My Session on Mendeley at St. Agnes College, Mangalore

Introduction

It was an honour to be invited as a Resource Person to conduct a session on Mendeley, the renowned reference management software, at St. Agnes College, Mangalore. This enlightening programme was organized as part of the celebration of Dr. S R Ranganathan’s Birth Day, a day dedicated to the father of library science in India.

The Inaugural Ceremony

The program commenced at 9:30 am in the esteemed presence of Dr. Shailarani, Librarian of the Balmata Government First Grade College, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The library of St. Agnes College, under the guidance of Dr. Vishala, played a pivotal role in organizing this significant event.





Honouring Dr. S R Ranganathan

Dr. Shailarani eloquently spoke about the five laws of library science contributed by Dr. S R Ranganathan. She delved into detail about his monumental contributions to the development of library science, which have shaped the way libraries function today.

Embracing Technological Change

Dr. Sureshramana Mayya, an esteemed colleague and a visionary in the field, highlighted the technological changes that have transformed modern libraries. He emphasized the crucial role librarians play in adapting to these changes to meet the evolving expectations of students and researchers.

A Call to Action

The Administrative Officer of the institute, Sr. Carmel Rita, encouraged the attendees to actively utilize the rich resources available in the library. Her words were a reminder that libraries are treasure troves of knowledge, waiting to be explored.

The Importance of Research

Dr. Venessa, the Principal of St. Agnes College, stressed the significance of research in the academic and professional growth of individuals. Her insights were a testament to the college’s commitment to fostering a vibrant research culture.

Prize Distribution: Celebrating Excellence in Review of Book and Video Competitions

A special prize distribution ceremony was conducted to recognize and reward outstanding contributions in the Review of Book and Video Competitions. Dr. Mayya and Dr. Shailarani had the honor of distributing the prizes to the deserving winners, marking a memorable moment of the event.

My Session on Mendeley

After the inaugural ceremony, I, Dr. Mayya, conducted a detailed session on using Mendeley. The session covered:

Introduction to Mendeley: An overview of what Mendeley is and why it is an essential tool for researchers.

Reference Manager: How Mendeley can help in organizing and citing research papers effortlessly.

Mendeley Cite: A guide to using Mendeley’s plugin for Microsoft Word, which makes citing and creating bibliographies a breeze.

Mendeley Web Importer: Demonstrating how to import references directly from your web browser into your Mendeley library.

Exploring the Library in Detail: A comprehensive walkthrough of Mendeley’s features, including organizing references, creating groups, and syncing data across devices.

Ms. Prema D’Souze graciously introduced me to the audience, setting a warm and welcoming tone for the session.

A Heartfelt Thanks

The event concluded with Dr. Kavyashri B, Assistant Professor of Psychology, extending a heartfelt vote of thanks to all the guests and participants. Her words were a fitting end to a day filled with learning and inspiration.

A Day of Honor: Witnessing Dr. N R Nayak’s Felicitation Ceremony

The Anticipation

It was an unusual day, one marked with a sense of anticipation and respect. I had been waiting for this day for a week. Dr. N R Nayak, my esteemed Principal at SDM College, Honavar, was being felicitated with the prestigious Dr. Keshav Bhat Prashasthi.



Rescheduling for a Special Occasion

Understanding the significance of this event, I rescheduled my regular visit to Srinivas University. I marked August 5, 2023, on my calendar, ensuring that I would be free to witness this special programme.

Arrival at MGM College

On the day of the event, I arrived at MGM College punctually, exactly at 9:30 am. A palpable sense of excitement was in the air as I entered the venue.

Reunion with a Mentor

Upon my arrival, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. N R Nayak, a figure whom I hold in the highest regard. He is not just a principal to me; he is a mentor and a source of inspiration. Dr. Nayak is sincere, hardworking, and dedicated. His leadership brought a sense of discipline and order to SDM College that is both palpable and admirable.

A Legacy in Folklore and Kannada Literature

Beyond his administrative prowess, Dr. Nayak has carved a niche for himself in the world of Folklore and Kannada Literature. His contributions to these fields are profound and extensive, making him a respected figure not just within our institution but in the broader academic community.

A Family Affair

During the event, I also spoke with Dr. Nayak’s family—his son and wife. Seeing the pride and joy in their eyes as they prepared to watch him receive this well-deserved honor was heartwarming.

The Award Ceremony

The highlight of the day was witnessing Dr. N R Nayak receive the Dr. Keshav Bhat Prashasthi. The applause that filled the room as he walked onto the stage was a recognition of his professional achievements and a testament to the lives he has touched through his work.

Reflections

As I left MGM College that day, I felt profound gratitude. I was not just a witness to an award ceremony; I was part of a celebration of a remarkable individual—a teacher, a leader, and a scholar.
