Joyful Gatherings: Celebrating Navaneeth's Wedding in Manipal

We recently celebrated the marriage and reception of Navaneeth, the younger son of Sri Nagaraj Shetty, a prominent member of ABC Laughing Yoga in Manipal. Sri Nagaraj invited us to all the events associated with his son’s wedding. Navaneeth has been a familiar face at the ABC Laughing Club for many years.

For personal reasons, I attended only the marriage ceremony on 18th April 2024, while my friends also participated in the Sangeetha, Engagement, and Reception. The ceremony was well-attended, and I reconnected with several acquaintances, including Prameshwar Adiga, my BBM classmate; Nagaraja Bhat from Corporation Bank; and numerous friends from the Laughing Club. I also had the pleasure of meeting CA Vineeth, Navaneeth's brother.

The highlight was the vegetarian lunch we enjoyed together at noon. My wife, Shreemathi, joined me at the function, although she had to attend another event later in the day—the wedding of one of her students at Dharmavara Auditorium.

Mangalore to Goa Vande Bharat Express: A Memorable Journey

On December 30, 2023, a significant milestone was achieved in Indian Railways' history when Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the new Mangaluru Central to Madgaon Goa Vande Bharat Express train. This inaugural event, conducted via video conferencing from the revamped Ayodhya Dham railway station, marked the introduction of a high-speed, luxurious travel option connecting Karnataka and Goa.

The Vande Bharat Express, operating between Mangaluru and Madgaon, promises to enhance tourism and provide a convenient travel option for commuters, including students, business professionals, and IT experts. The train, numbered 20646/20645, offers a scenic journey with stops at Udupi and Karwar. Departing from Mangaluru Central at 8:30 AM, it reaches Madgaon at 1:15 PM, and on its return, it leaves Madgaon at 6:10 PM, arriving in Mangaluru Central at 10:45 PM. Operating six days a week, this train excludes service on Thursdays.

This Vande Bharat service, the 41st in India, commenced its commercial journey on December 31, 2023. Ticket prices range from Rs. 1220.00 for AC Chair Car to Rs. 2210.00 for Executive Chair Car, with Tatkal options available at higher rates.

Eager to experience this new service, I, along with Dr. S S Karanth, his wife Smt Kusuma Karanth, my wife Dr. Shreemathi S Mayya, and my co-brother Sri Gopikrishna Bhat and his wife Smt. Saraswathi Bhat, embarked on this journey from Udupi to Madgaon. The Executive Coach, with its welcoming staff, comfortable seating, and amenities like newspapers and high tea, offered a luxurious experience, complemented by the lush green views outside.

Upon reaching Madgaon, we planned to visit the Birla Radha Krishna Temple but learned it opened at 3 pm. Instead, we first visited the Naval Aviation Museum in Goa, inaugurated in 1998. This unique museum, the only one of its kind in Asia, showcases a rich array of aircraft and naval equipment. Its outdoor gallery displays 13 aircraft, while the interior, designed like the INS Viraat, features various galleries, a Jet cockpit simulator, and a 'Shradhanjali' granite slab honoring Naval Pilots.

Later, we visited the Birla Radha Krishna Temple, a serene sanctuary blending traditional Indian architecture with modern elements. The temple, set amidst Goa's lush greenery, is not just a place of worship but a cultural hub, attracting devotees and art enthusiasts alike.

After a fulfilling day, we met my relative Mr. Rathnakar Rao, a respected pharmacy proprietor and yoga teacher. We concluded our visit with coffee at Madgaon Railway Station and purchased Bibinka to share with our laughing club members.

Our return journey on the Vande Bharat Express was equally pleasant, marking the end of a memorable and satisfying trip. This experience on the Vande Bharat Express, from Mangalore to Goa and back, was not just a journey but a testament to the progress and luxury now available in Indian rail travel.

Revisiting Memories: A Heartwarming Journey Back to Honnavar and SDM College

My visit to Honnavar on 26 December 2023, holds a special place in my heart; it's where I secured a permanent position at SDM College, experienced the warmth of its community, and received heartfelt invitations from the locals. The college's management was exceptional, making any opportunity to return there one I would eagerly embrace.

A month back, Sudha, a former student from my 1987 batch at Honnavar's SDM College, reached out. She invited me to a reception at Shri Jnaneshwari Sabha Bhavan on December 26th. Many of her classmates planned to attend, and I was delighted to accept her invitation.

On the 26th, I began my journey to Honnavar. After receiving a refund for my research chair at Madagaon Express that morning, I only paid Rs. 60 for my ticket from Udupi Railway Station to Honnavar. While waiting at the station, I had an engaging conversation with Sri Lakshminarayana Hegde, a businessman from Sirisi now residing in Udupi, about topics like the Konkan Railway and pharmaceutical distribution challenges.

My train, number 06602, was delayed, departing Udupi at 8:30 am instead of 7:32 am due to various reasons, including the trial run of the Vande Bharath train. It made numerous stops before finally reaching Honnavar at 11:30 am. I arrived at the function hall near Daivajna Temple by noon, surprised to find only a few people there. The stage was beautifully adorned with flowers, and the names of the bride and groom were elegantly displayed.

Sudha and her husband, busy with the event, warmly welcomed me. She introduced me to her relatives and quickly called our former students who were at Rajeev's house. Soon after, my old students - Rajeev, Kaleel, Muketesar, Shukoor, Arundhathi, Panduranga Sanu, Lalitha, and her husband - arrived, evoking fond memories of 1987 at SDM College.

We reminisced about various events, memorable days, and tours. I also had the opportunity to take photos with the newlyweds. Expressing a desire to revisit SDM College, I accompanied them there, met with the Principal, Alware, other faculty members, and enjoyed a tea session.

Later, Shukurr kindly dropped me off at Bhatkal Bus Stand, from where I returned home by bus. That day rejuvenated me, surrounded by my former students. It reminded me of Chitra Padiyar's words, a former student at MGM, "A teacher never grows old in the memory of a student."

A Memorable Housewarming Celebration at BR Meadows in Udupi

On December 20, 2023, I had the pleasure of attending the housewarming ceremony for a flat bought by my co-brother, Sri Giridharkrishna Bhat, at BR Meadows, located near the Shree Sai Super Market at Ambalpady Cross in Udupi. The event was a cozy gathering of about 25 to 30 people. Following the ceremonial rituals, we all enjoyed a delightful dinner together.
